Military training exercises to take place in 19 counties

Special Forces candidates will be participating this week in a training exercise across the state.

From Friday through Aug. 17, students will take part in the Robin Sage training exercise before graduating the course and moving on to their first assignments in the Army's Special Forces.

The candidates are students at the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School, based out of Fort Bragg.

Approximately 200 students will participate, along with 500 military members and civilian support personnel and 150 members of the general public.

Military members will act as opposing forces and guerrilla freedom fighters. A news release said residents may hear blank gunfire and see occasional flares, but there should be no risk to residents or property.

Local law enforcement agencies have been notified and training areas and vehicles will be clearly labeled.

Residents with concerns can contact local officials who will immediately contact exercise control officials, however.

The exercises will take place in Alamance, Anson, Cabarrus, Chatham, Cumberland, Davidson, Davie, Guilford, Hoke, Lee, Montgomery, Moore, Randolph, Richmond, Robeson, Rowan, Scotland, Stanly and Union counties.
