Suspects in custody after murder of 19-year-old in Monroe park, police say

MONROE, N.C. — Three suspects, including two teenagers, are now in custody and facing charges after a 19-year-old was shot and killed in a Monroe park on July 31, police said.

According to a post on the Monroe Police Department’s Facebook page, officers were called to Dickerson Park around 7:45 a.m. and found the victim, Yusuff Haamid-Sumpter, dead from a gunshot wound.

After an investigation, police said they identified three suspects, including two teens, and were working to bring them into custody.

Earlier this month, Mekhi Barrino-Straing turned himself in to police on charges of first-degree murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit a felony. He is being held with no bond.

The two teens are also charged with first-degree murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit a felony, MPD said.

On Wednesday, the last of the two teens was taken into custody in Albemarle, according to police. Due to their age, neither of the teens can be identified by police.
