Monroe officer on unpaid leave after DWI charge, officials say

MONROE, N.C. — Monroe Police Department Officer Darren Nash, 34, was arrested early Thursday night for driving while intoxicated, Monroe officials said.

Police received a call around 6:50 p.m. about a possible medical call on West Roosevelt Boulevard. When police arrived, they found Nash behind the wheel of his car. During the investigation, it was determined Nash was impaired.

He was taken to the Union County jail. Officials said he refused to submit to an Intoxylizer test. He was charged with DWI and released under a written promise to appear.

Nash has a court date of May 11.

He was placed on unpaid administrative leave.

"As police officers, we are all human, but we are held to higher standards than those we serve. This is an unfortunate incident that is not a direct reflection of our department and the level of service we provide. We will not treat this investigation any differently and are committed to ensuring justice is served," Monroe Police Chief Bryan Gilliard said in a statement.

Nash has been an officer with Monroe since Nov. 17, 2008.
