GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — The North Carolina Court of Appeals has upheld Marshawn Devon Sanders’ conviction for first-degree murder in a fatal 2020 shooting in Gastonia.
The case was originally prosecuted by the office of Gaston County District Attorney Travis Page.
According to the case summary, Sanders and his girlfriend broke up around February 2020, and she moved out of their shared home.
She took money from Sanders’ bank account and took his gun, which she gave to a friend.
In April 2020, Sanders texted his former girlfriend about the money and gun and threatened her.
Two months later, Sanders and his new girlfriend drove to Gastonia to look for his ex-girlfriend, who was reportedly staying at her sister’s home. They saw her at a gas station.
Sanders opened fire toward his ex-girlfriend’s car, striking her friend in the chest. The friend died at the scene.
The Court of Appeals upheld Sanders’ first-degree murder conviction.
