NC beach snags top spot in yearly ranking of nation’s best

HYDE COUNTY, N.C. — If you live in North Carolina and need plans for a summer vacation, you don’t have to look too far. The lifeguarded beach at Ocracoke in the Outer Banks has returned to the top of Dr. Beach’s list of 10 Best Beaches in America for 2022.

Charlotte native and N.C. State University graduate Dr. Stephen Leatherman, known as Dr. Beach, rates 650 public beaches based on 50 criteria, including beach width, water and sand quality, wildlife cleanliness and public safety. Leatherman frequently refers to Ocracoke as his favorite getaway beach and says Ocracoke has everything vacationers are looking for.

“It has beautiful sand, soft light, and the water’s clean and clear,” he told Visit NC, part of the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina. “The temperature’s in the 70s today, beach-type weather, no jellyfish, no seaweed. Then it has a quaint little village with B&Bs and small, wonderful restaurants.”
