NC board suspends license of homebuilder Action 9′s been investigating

CHARLOTTE — North Carolina’s Licensing Board for General Contractors has suspended Aaron Guess’s license for allegedly failing to disclose certain information when he tried to renew his license in 2019.

Action 9 has been investigating Guess after multiple people from different neighborhoods complained about the homebuilder.

Now, Guess has six months to pass a 40-hour building code course and pay the board up to $15,000.

If he does both of those, he can start building again, but he will still be on probation for a year.

If he doesn’t do what he’s supposed to over the next six months, Guess will lose his license for that extra year as well.

Guess’s lawyer emailed Action 9:

“Mr. Guess and Story Homes Construction are pleased that their names have been cleared and they have been vindicated on all contested allegations before the North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors. The Board’s Final Order takes issue with a clerical error that was made in the Spring of 2019, which was promptly corrected and has not occurred again. Mr. Guess and Story Homes look forward to resolving the remaining dispute over the penalty handed down for this administrative error through the appeal process and will not comment on the remaining part of the pending litigation.”

Guess must stop construction projects immediately, so if he’s in the middle of your project, reach out to him — remember you should still have a contract with him and it’s up to him to figure out how to handle the rest.

Action 9 started looking into complaints against Guess and his company, Story Homes, in September. Multiple people living in the Magnolia Cove neighborhood in Sherrills Ford said Guess didn’t deliver on promises, including a neighborhood pool, lawn service, and mailboxes.

A group of engineers sued Guess, claiming he altered their inspection reports to get county approval he may not have secured otherwise. The case was settled.

A homeowner in another neighborhood, Widgeon Heights in Mooresville, also sued Guess. He claimed Guess broke promises as well, such as a fence he was relying on for his dog. That case is still going on.
