CHARLOTTE, N.C. - There are more than 20,000 registered sex offenders in North Carolina.

Each one is required to register with the state -- their name, picture address and other information can be found on the sex offender registry, but Attorney General Roy Cooper said the state is trying to make it easier for parents to access the information on the go.

There is now a mobile version of the site available for Android phones. Already, 40,000 people have downloaded a similar app for the iPhone.

It's all linked to the state site with some added features.

"It allows you to put in your email address and we will send you information on any sex offender that moves into any area that you designate," Cooper said.

The app also allows you to look up a specific name or address and will tell you how many registered sex offenders are within a 1-, 3- and 5-mile radius.

In Mecklenburg County, there are 980 registered sex offenders, a number Sheriff Chip Bailey said has increased with the population growth.

"With a growth like that, you're going to have certain folks who have a criminal history, who are registered sex offenders or other crimes and so it continually grows with the population," Bailey said.

Bailey said the new app is helpful for parents looking at schools or homes in a certain area.

"It's just a tool that the parents can use along with other things -- common sense, talking to your kids," Bailey said.

Every six months, the sheriff's office checks on hundreds of offenders to make sure they are registered and are at the correct address.

Last month, they targeted 700 offenders.
