Neighbors oppose proposed Dollar General over traffic, safety concerns

MOUNT HOLLY, N.C. — Neighbors are pushing back against plans for a Dollar General in Mount Holly, saying the store could bring more traffic to a residential road and create safety concerns.

Mark Abernathy is one of a few neighbors who have dug into the details of plans for a proposed Dollar General just across the street. They have copies of the plans.

“It just doesn’t make sense to have it right there,” Abernathy said. “It’s not a commercial property. It’s residential and it needs to stay that way.”

He said people on Greendale Drive don’t have to worry about traffic. It’s a dead-end road.

He said that would change if Dollar General is allowed to put a store entrance on the residential road.

“That dramatically affects the entrance of someone’s neighborhood,” Abernathy said. “People walk and they ride their bikes, and they have their dogs out.”

He said a Dollar General could also cause problems on Hickory Grove Road because drivers would have to make a sudden stop around a big curve.

“There’s going to be accidents. We see them all the time,” he said.

Abernathy said he has stopped several times to help crash victims.

There are more than 100 signatures on a petition opposing rezoning to allow a Dollar General there.

“I think it devalues the property all around Dollar General. One nationwide franchise benefits, and all the rest of us around here don’t benefit,” Abernathy said.

Channel 9’s Ken Lemon called the developer, who said he passed Lemon’s number along to Dollar General representatives. We haven’t heard back from them. A public forum about their plans is scheduled for next week, and commissioners are expected to consider the issue next month.
