CHARLOTTE — Charlotte Douglas International Airport has added several new flight destinations over the past year as other local routes experienced a carrier shakeup.
One of CLT’s noteworthy new flights actually launches next year. American Airlines Group Inc. (NASDAQ: AAL) will start seasonal service on May 27 between Charlotte and Barcelona. The new flight to Spain marks American’s ninth international route at the Charlotte airport. It also flies to Madrid from CLT.
That addition comes after Etihad Airways debuted service to Abu Dhabi from Charlotte in March, becoming CLT’s first carrier to fly nonstop to the Middle East.
American added local flights to Florida and a couple of college towns as well. It started daily service to Vero Beach in February and will begin flying to Naples on Dec. 2. The Fort Worth, Texas-based airline also launched a route to Columbia, Missouri — home to the University of Missouri — in June. Two daily flights to State College, Pennsylvania, where Pennsylvania State University’s main campus is based, started Oct. 5.
And Contour Airlines, a Tennessee-based regional carrier, is gearing up to launch service from Charlotte to Williamsport Regional Airport in Pennsylvania on Oct. 19. That’s as Contour lost two routes at CLT earlier this year. American in February took over those flights to Shenandoah Valley Airport near Staunton, Virginia, and Greenbrier Valley Airport in Lewisburg, West Virginia.
