CHARLOTTE — The Charlotte Area Transit System is opening a new pedestrian rail crossing in South End on Monday.
The infrastructure project aims to improve transit safety, accessibility and connectivity for residents, employees and visitors in Charlotte, CATS officials said Friday in a news release.
The new rail crossing is part of broader infrastructure investments designed to strengthen connections to nearby neighborhoods and businesses. Transit officials plan to open an adjacent light rail station in 2028 to support the continued growth of the South End community.
CATS Interim CEO Brent Cagle highlighted the goals of the infrastructure projects in a statement regarding the system updates.
“The new station and pedestrian crossing represent an important investment in Charlotte’s transportation network, improving access to public transit while creating safer, more convenient connections for people walking, biking and using transit,” Cagle said in the news release. “These enhancements support CATS’ commitment to providing a reliable, accessible and sustainable transportation system that meets the needs of a growing community.”
Although the crossing is open for public use, construction activity remains ongoing in the surrounding area. CATS advised pedestrians to exercise caution, remain within designated crosswalks, avoid walking on gravel or tracks, obey posted safety signage, stop and look both ways and listen for approaching train bells.
Crews will continue work in the surrounding area while preparations proceed for the opening of the light rail station in 2028.
