Next phase of Charlotte Douglas Airport expansion gets green light

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The next phase of renovations and expansions at Charlotte Douglas International Airport is ready for takeoff after getting a green light last night from City Council for about $518 million worth of construction-related contracts.

This latest phase of the 10-year, $2.5 billion-plus Destination CLT program, as CBJ has previously reported, will expand the terminal lobby and revamp TSA checkpoints, among other improvements. The airport’s iconic Queen Charlotte statue — removed from its perch near the terminal’s entrance to its current, less visible spot several years ago to make way for construction projects — will be brought indoors.

Work is expected to start in December, coming on the heels of the recent completion of a roadway project just outside the terminal lobby.
