CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A local nonprofit has spent the day collecting book bags in a part of their effort to prevent bullying in the upcoming school year.
Payton's promise will be at the Walmart on Pineville-Matthews Road for another two hours collecting book bags and supplies.
The group said the fresh, new supplies are one less excuse for bullies to target other students.
One volunteer said they also offer free haircuts, sneakers and other events throughout the year that allow them to connect with young people and encourage them to stand up against bullying.
"It is what you do with that moment that you have that stage so we take advantage of that stage to address the problem," said Sebastian Jones.
Payton's promise also teaches anti-bullying curriculum to students.
Volunteers plan to give away the free backpacks during a back-to-school event later this month.
