STATESVILLE, N.C. — An Asheville fire chief who died in a car crash this week in Iredell County was honored by area departments Tuesday.
Reynolds Fire Department Chief Richard Sales' body was escorted from Wake Forest Baptist Hospital to his home in Asheville.
The Statesville Fire Department used its ladder truck to hold a massive U.S. flag over Interstate 40 in Iredell County.
Sales, 52, was on I-40 driving east near Statesville on Sunday when his car ran through barriers in the middle of the highway. He died from his injuries.
He was going to Wilmington for a conference on safety and was set to accept an award on behalf of his department.
The cause of the deadly crash has not yet been released.
Friends said Sales was passionate about firefighting and this loss has hit the community hard.
Services for Sales will be held at Biltmore Church located at 35 Clayton Road in Arden and are as follows:
- Visitation: Thursday, 5 to 9 p.m.
- Funeral: Friday, 10 a.m.
- Following the services, a procession will take Sales to the cemetery at Gashes Creek Baptist Church located at 308 Gashes Creek Road in Asheville.
