North Carolina is receiving more than $20 million in federal funding for rail infrastructure and safety improvements, including track and bridge upgrades in Montgomery and Stanly counties.

The U.S. Department of Transportation announced Monday that the Federal Railroad Administration is investing $2.3 billion in freight and passenger rail projects across 45 states and Washington, D.C., through its Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements (CRISI) Grant Program.

North Carolina projects will receive the following funding:

  • $19.9 million for Aberdeen Carolina & Western Railway Company: The funding will support installing about 30 miles of continuous welded rail, rehabilitating bridges, and upgrading crossing signals in Montgomery and Stanly counties.
  • $100,000 for the City of Greensboro: The grant will support law enforcement patrols in areas with documented trespassing incidents along a three-mile corridor used by passenger and freight trains.

The federal agency said the grants are intended to improve rail safety, efficiency, and reliability. This round of funding is expected to improve more than 2,000 miles of track nationwide.

“Under President Trump, USDOT is investing in rail projects that will unleash local economies and deliver real safety upgrades,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy said in a statement announcing the funding.

Federal officials said applications were evaluated based on criteria including project readiness, technical merit, and expected benefits.

The CRISI program supports projects involving freight and intercity passenger rail, including infrastructure improvements, congestion reduction and safety efforts aimed at preventing trespassing-related injuries and deaths.
