North Carolina market named a finalist for major Olympic event in 2027

CHARLOTTE — North Carolina’s Triangle region is a finalist for the 2027 Summer World University Games, the International University Sports Federation announced late yesterday, putting the market squarely in position to add a major festival for the first time since 1987.

Chungcheong, South Korea, is also competing for the event.

Hill Carrow, who is spearheading the effort in the Raleigh-Durham area, said a decision is expected Oct. 9.

He led the region’s effort to host the 1987 Olympic Festival, a massive event that captured the state’s attention at a time when the Triangle was just emerging on the national scene.

This event would be much larger.
