North Charlotte homeowner says he acted to protect family in break-in shooting

CHARLOTTE — A homeowner says he was protecting his family when he shot at someone accused of breaking into his north Charlotte house early Wednesday morning.

Reports from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department say it unfolded along Glen Brook Road off West Sugar Creek Road.

The family said they woke up to loud banging. The homeowner told Channel 9 the suspect was in the home for about 10 seconds when he met them in the hallway and immediately began shooting.

“You don’t know how many people it is; you don’t know what their intentions are; you don’t know anything,” the homeowner said. “You just know somebody’s breaking in, so all you can do at that moment is protect yourself, you know? I didn’t have any hesitation. As soon as I knew someone was coming in, I just let it fire, let it go.”

The homeowner says he’s not sure if he hit the suspect. He says they ran away.

Channel 9 reached out to CMPD to see if they have any leads on the intruder.

Under North Carolina’s Castle Doctrine, homeowners are allowed to use deadly force against an intruder. There is no duty to retreat, and the law protects residents from legal liability.
