NEWTON, N.C. — The official cause of a train derailment at East Second Street and Mid-State Mills in Newton is still under investigation.
Officials said about five cars left the tracks. There were no reports of injuries and no cars overturned.
Investigators are checking to see if rain softened the ground under the rails and allowed it to give way.
