Officials: Man in custody after woman, toddler hospitalized in stabbing

CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. — A man is in custody, accused in a stabbing that left a mother and her child with serious injuries Wednesday night in Caldwell County.

Officers were called to the scene late Wednesday night along Fairway Acres Drive, just south of Lenoir.

Investigators said the suspect stabbed the woman inside her home. They said a toddler was also injured and airlifted to the hospital. William Pitts was charged with two counts of attempted murder and is locked up under a million dollar bond.

Police said they were also checking a younger child at the scene for possible injuries.

Police told Channel 9 that it may have stemmed from a domestic incident.

Sonya Pitts showed reporter Dave Faherty pictures of her brother little brother Henry from last Christmas. She told Channel 9 that she contacted the Department of Social Services about her father, William Pitts, this year over substance abuse issues.

Family members said DSS began an investigation and made two visits to the home but didn't drug test him.

"They only visited twice and that was it," daughter Samantha Leigh said. "No drug testing. No nothing. All that can be prevented by one drug test."

Channel 9 asked DSS about the investigation but a county representative said under North Carolina law they cannot confirm or deny the investigation took place.

Leigh hopes her father gets the help he needs and isn't allowed around her young brother.

"Oh, I'm hurt," Leigh said. "I want to love my daddy. I don't want to hate him. I'm so confused."
