One of Charlotte’s largest banks begins phased return to offices

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Local employees at Fifth Third Bancorp are returning to the office — in contrast to other big banks here.

The Cincinnati-based bank said it started bringing employees back last week in two groups on alternating weeks. Employees at high risk or living with someone at high risk can still work from home. Accommodations are also being made for childcare needs.

Fifth Third went to 95% remote work for those who could be offsite when the pandemic hit. That accounted for roughly 10,000 of its employees. Locally, about 300 non-branch employees work at Fifth Third Center in uptown. Staff at branches and operation centers remained onsite with safety protocols.

The bank did bring back a small group of about 1,000 employees in May.
