CHARLOTTE — A 25-year-old driver was killed after the car she was speeding in hit a tree Sunday night in northwest Charlotte, police said.
At about 8:30 p.m., Kimberly Ashley Tavarez was driving a 2005 Ford Freestyle on Bellhaven Boulevard near Bellhaven Circle when she drove off the right side of the road, hitting the tree, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said Monday in a news release.
On the scene, Channel 9 crews could see the Ford flipped on its side and several police cruisers blocking the road.
Tavarez and her 32-year-old passenger were taken to a hospital. Tavarez who wasn’t wearing a seat belt died at the hospital. Her passenger who was wearing a seat belt had minor injuries.
Police said she was speeding when she went off the side of the road.
Speed and impairment are suspected factors and toxicology results are pending.
The investigation is ongoing.
