Overflowing pipe to blame for March chemical leak at Silfab Solar

FORT MILL, S.C. — Silfab Solar said an overflowing pipe is to blame for one of two chemical leaks at the Fort Mill plant in March.

The company shared photos of the scrubber pipe they said burst. Officials say a faulty valve caused it to overflow with potassium hydroxide.

The chemical then spilled into a retention pond but never left Silfab’s property.

Silfab released the findings in an effort to be more transparent. They say they have repaired the pipe and plan to add more insulation to keep it from happening again.
