Parent alarmed at what she saw on day care’s livestream

A parent said she started recording a day care’s livestream when she saw a worker hit a child.

Alyssa Stillwell carefully picked Tutor Time Steele Creek to enroll her 3-year-old daughter.

She said relatives gave the day care raving reviews.

“They said that the learning was very structured, and that the student, the teachers could be strict,” Stillwell said. “But it was good for the students.”

She said what she saw streamed on the internet wasn’t good.

Stillwell said she pulled up the day care’s livestream on her daughter’s second day.

“Within 60 seconds of me turning this on, I saw the woman in the light gray shirt from the video, hit a child on the bottom with the ruler,” Stillwell said. “And that’s when I immediately started recording.”

Stillwell said that she used her phone to record the livestream for 40 minutes and during that time, she sent a relative to pick up her daughter.

“I just kept recording, but that’s when things started to get much more physical,” Stillwell said. “I couldn’t imagine that somebody would know they were being recorded on camera, and they would behave like that.”

In a letter sent to parents, a spokeswoman for Tutor Time called its livestreaming part of its open-door policy.

The representative said the worker involved is now on leave and will take appropriate steps based on the state’s findings.

“There’s an investigation pending. I don’t understand what the investigation is. They have the video,” Stillwell said.

A representative for the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services said the state is aware of an incident and considering its next steps.
