Man charged with murder after southeast Charlotte shooting, police say

CHARLOTTE — A man has been charged with murder after a March 7 shooting in southeast Charlotte, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.

David Lamar Caldwell, 23, is charged with murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

At around 3:30 a.m., officers received a call from Matthews police about a gunshot wound victim arriving at Novant Health Matthews Medical Center after an incident in Charlotte.

The victim, 24-year-old Juwan Carlos Hernandez, died at the hospital just before 4 a.m.

A woman who lived at the apartment complex nearby told reporter Anthony Kustura she heard two gunshots and ducked down immediately.

“I heard two gunshots, but that’s normal because it came from the streets,” a neighbor said. “It’s going to continue regardless. It’s going to be worse regardless.”

Detectives identified Caldwell as a suspect earlier this week and obtained warrants for his arrest.

Caldwell turned himself in to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office overnight on March 17.

There is no information on what led to the shooting.
