Police chief suspended, accused of driving town-owned vehicle after drinking

CABARRUS COUNTY, N.C. — According to Mount Gilead Town Manager Katina Tatum, a local police chief has been suspended after he was stopped while driving a town-owned vehicle after drinking alcohol.

Channel 9's partners at The Independent Tribune say Mount Gilead Chief Cleve Willoughby and another officer were driving in Cabarrus County last week when a witness called to report an erratic driver.

Authorities said alcohol was involved, but not enough to warrant any charges.

Deputies, however, refused to let the two officers continue driving the vehicle.
