Deputies charge man after homicide investigation led to standoff in Chester County

CHESTER COUNTY, S.C. — Deputies have charged a suspect after they say he shot and killed a man last Wednesday, then held up officers for several hours in a SWAT standoff.

Officials said 42-year-old Scott Buckner has been charged with the murder of 57-year-old Terry Jones as well as possession of a firearm or ammunition by a person convicted of a violent felony, use of vehicle without permission with intent to deprive, kidnapping and possession of stolen property.

Sheriff’s deputies went to a home on Pinckney Road in the western part of the county around 11:50 a.m. last Wednesday, where they found a man shot to death.

He was later identified as Jones.

Authorities found a truck that belonged to Jones less than three hours later in the backyard of a home on West Elliott Street in Chester, officials said.

They set up a perimeter because it was related to a murder investigation and contacted a woman inside. She got out and said the suspect, Buckner, was inside with a pistol and a rifle.

The woman also said she was forced to stay inside the home against her will for an “extended amount of time.”

Law enforcement negotiated with Buckner between 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division “deployed less-than-lethal chemical agents and a robot inside the home,” the Chester County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

A SLED SWAT team got inside the home and found Buckner lying unconscious, authorities said. The SWAT team got him out and got him medical attention. Buckner was taken to the Chester Regional Medical Center.

Upon discharge, Buckner will be charged with kidnapping, possession of stolen property and possession of a stolen vehicle. Other charges are pending, authorities said.

It is not clear how Buckner is connected with the homicide victim’s truck.
