Police investigating shooting into Lyft SUV on I-85 in north Charlotte

CHARLOTTE — A shooting was reported on Interstate 85 Thursday afternoon in north Charlotte while passengers were inside a ride-share vehicle.

Chopper 9 Skyzoom flew over two different scenes in north Charlotte. Police were investigating near a Jeep Cherokee that was parked on I-85 near Beatties Ford Road; we could see bulletholes on the driver’s side of the SUV, and one of the windows appeared to be broken. The second scene was at a Bojangles parking lot on Statesville Avenue near Beatties Ford Road, and Chopper 9 Skyzoom spotted multiple police cars and an ambulance.

MEDIC confirmed that paramedics went to the Bojangles after the shooting call on I-85. One patient was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, MEDIC said.

Chopper 9 Skyzoom could see the ambulance leaving the scene with a police escort.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department confirmed that the shooting happened while the Jeep was going south on I-85.

According to CMPD, one passenger had non-life-threatening injuries. No other injuries were reported.

Channel 9 spoke with the Lyft driver who owned the Jeep, and he said he was taking the passengers to Gastonia when the shooting happened.

The driver, who asked to remain anonymous, told Channel 9′s Jonathan Lowe that he was listening to music and driving in the middle lane when he heard a loud bang. That’s when he saw another vehicle pull up to the side of the Jeep and fire numerous shots into the rear passenger side of the SUV.

The driver said he pulled off to the side of the road to get away from the gunman, and the other people got out of the car and walked away from the interstate. He told Lowe that one of the passengers had a gun and asked the driver to not call police.

No suspects have been arrested at this time.
