CMPD charge man for fatally shooting 17-year-old in northwest Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police have charged a man for fatally shooting a 17-year-old boy shortly before 7 p.m. on Sunday. The shooting happened on Red Bud Circle, which is off Valleydale Road in northwest Charlotte, according to officers.

The victim, Sharrieff Jones Jr., was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Deontae Eddings, 18, was arrested on Friday and charged with second-degree murder.

CMPD initially tweeted that the shooting was a homicide but later Sunday evening authorities told Channel 9 that “this investigation is still in the early stages, but it is currently classified as a death investigation.”

On Thursday, police said they are now investigating the shooting as a homicide.

No further information has been released.

Before the shooting death, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police were trying to solve two separate homicides that happened within five hours of each other on Saturday night.

One happened around midnight Saturday, on Caroway Street in University City, which is off Pavilion Boulevard near Interstate 485.

Police said they were in the middle of a traffic stop nearby when they heard gunshots. When they got to Caroway Street, they found 23-year-old Jontavius Hall, who had been shot.

Hall died at the scene.

Officers arrested 21-year-old Stoni Asbury on Thursday and charged her with murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

Authorities have not said what led up to the shooting.

About five hours before Hall’s murder, Derreck McDonald, 36, was found shot to death in the parking lot at the Andover Woods Apartments off Sharon Lakes Road. No arrests have been made in that crime either.

No other information has been released.

There have been 112 homicides reported in the city in 2020.

These are ongoing investigations. Check back with wsoctv.com for updates.
