Police: SUV hits, kills woman who was walking across northeast Charlotte road

One person killed in crash on East W.T. Harris Boulevard (WSOC)

CHARLOTTE — A woman died after she was hit by a car in northeast Charlotte on Thursday night, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said.

Officers were called around 8:30 p.m. to East W.T. Harris Boulevard, near its intersection with The Plaza, for reports of a person hit by a car.

At the scene, police said they found a 2012 Cadillac SRX SUV with damage to its front, and an unresponsive pedestrian laying in the road.

The Charlotte Fire Department said the pedestrian, later identified Jennifer Ann Northrup, 44, died from her injuries, according to police.

Based on the initial investigation, police said the Cadillac was driving northeast on East W.T. Harris Boulevard when Northrup tried to cross East W.T. Harris Blvd. from east to west. CMPD said Northrup crossed directly into the path of the SUV and was hit. The driver stopped and immediately called 911, according to police. The driver was not hurt in the crash.

Police said the area was not well lit and Northrup was not crossing in a marked crosswalk or at an intersection.

Speed and impairment were not contributing factors for the driver. Impairment is not suspected for Northrup, but toxicology results are pending.

CMPD said its investigation is ongoing, and asked anyone who saw the crash or has information to call Detective Oberer at 704-432-2169, extension 3.
