Procession held through Charlotte for paramedic who died on duty

CHARLOTTE — Dozens of first responders, including police officers and firefighters, lined the highway overpasses on Interstate 77 Tuesday morning as a transport procession was held for a Charlotte paramedic who died this past weekend.

Officials said Mark Hayes was on duty Saturday when he suffered a medical emergency.

The procession started just before 11 a.m. Tuesday as first responders cleared the highway as Hayes was transported to a funeral home in advance of his services that will be held later this week.

Hayes’ cause of death hasn’t been made available. He had been with MEDIC since 1997, according to the agency.
