Redevelopment of landmark building in east Charlotte moving forward

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Remediation work at the landmark Ervin Building in east Charlotte on Independence Boulevard is finally underway after years of sitting vacant.

Pineville real estate firm Gvest Capital rezoned the site, at 4037 E. Independence Blvd., about two years ago. Gvest said Thursday afternoon it would demo the building’s interior down to the original structure while preserving the historic exterior. The Ervin Building, also known as the Varnadore Building, was built in 1962.

Construction work on the building is expected to take about a year. Richard Gee, vice president at Gvest, said there will be 33,021 square feet of leasable space total, including about 4,500 square feet of office space on each floor and a 2,757-square-foot rooftop bar and restaurant.
