RICHBURG, N.C. — A fire chief resigned in the middle of a state law enforcement investigation.
Channel 9 reported last fall that Richburg Fire Chief Stewart T. Melton was put on leave after a whistleblower reported potential fraud or criminal activity within the Richburg Fire Protection District.
Melton resigned in April, county leaders said.
The Chester Fire District then hired him as chief administrator. The county said that SLED is still investigating.
