Rock Hill food bank filling big need for senior community

ROCK HILL, S.C. — A local food bank in Rock Hill is filling a big need for those in need in the community.

The Second Harvest Food Bank provides health resources and food giveaways. The center held an event on Monday to help seniors who are in need of a variety of supplies.

According to Feeding America, South Carolina is one of 10 states with the highest rates of senior food insecurity.

“I’ve been with the agency for 29 years and our waiting list never goes down,” executive director Lauren Giles said.

The food bank helps people like Evelyn Robinson, who is on a fixed income. Trying to make ends meet is sometimes hard for Robinson.

“Every little bit helps because I be cooking that broccoli, it is a blessing from the Lord because everything is so expensive these days,” Robinson said.

The food bank relies on community support to continue its mission. Seventy-five percent of the food that Second Harvest gives out comes from donations. That food then goes to 950 organizations across 24 different counties in the Carolinas. For more information on Channel 9′s own Food Drive, click here.
