Rockingham kicks off NASCAR weekend with Thunderfest

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. — Rockingham is getting revved up for a weekend full of NASCAR races.

Channel 9’s Gina Esposito spoke with business owners who are ready for Thunderfest, which is Thursday, kicking off NASCAR races set for Friday and Saturday.

“Money is good, but it’s more about being part of the community,” said Henry Antos, owner and chef at Henry’s Uptown Café.

There are activities for everyone, including a musical performance by the Eli Young Band.

“Last year, we were here, and this place was packed,” said Aundraya McCarron, a volunteer with Warriors in Motion.

McCarron has a booth for the nonprofit, Warriors in Motion, which provides adrenaline therapy for veterans and first responders.

She said events, including Thunderfest, help them get more exposure.

“We’re still trying to grow, and we’re still trying to help as many people as we can help,” McCarron said.

Rockingham city manager Monty Crump said the event is great for business and hopes to see crowds over the next several days.

“This is great for Rockingham,” Crump said. “For our downtown, for NASCAR to coming back for a second visit, after returning to The Rock last year.”

Antos agreed that it’s a good thing for the city.

“Hopefully, it all goes well. I hope a lot of people come, come back, and hopefully, NASCAR comes back and keeps coming back in our community. It’s a big help.”

NASCAR announced its return to Rockingham last year after a successful return to the track.
