UNION COUNTY, N.C. — The State Bureau of Investigations is investigating after a suicidal man died while in custody in Union County late Monday night.
Deputies received a call just before midnight about a man who cut himself and was walking around the Silver Creek subdivision with a knife.
They found the man, whose name has not been released, in the woods near High Brook Drive with a severe cut on his neck.
Deputies said they struggled with him while trying to take the knife away, before eventually getting him in handcuffs.
Paramedics arrived and pronounced the man dead.
Because the death occurred while the deputies were trying to take the man into custody, Sheriff Eddie Cathey requested the SBI to conduct an independent criminal investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident.
