Shoppers concerned after 11-year-olds accused of throwing rocks at cars in Ballantyne

CHARLOTTE — Two 11-year-old children are facing charges, accused of throwing rocks at cars while riding e-bikes near the Blakeney Town Center in Ballantyne, according to police reports.

The preteens weren’t just throwing rocks at cars, but were also speeding, police said. Shoppers said they’ve seen reckless kids on e-bikes in the area.

Holly Heath said her son knows several boys who got in trouble in the Ballantyne shopping center a few months ago for using a toy gun that shoots gel beads that splatter on impact.

“Parents, at this point, need to be more aware of what’s happening with their children,” Heath said.

The two pre-teens in the most recent case were riding when a caller reported them throwing rocks at cars, police said.

Police stopped the first child, but the second ran away. Officers used the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Aviation Unit to find the second child at a nearby home.

Both were charged with failure to heed lights and sirens and driving without a license before being released to their guardians.
