‘Still in shock’: NC restaurant server receives $1,000 tip week before Christmas

HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. — A North Carolina server received a $1,000 tip a week before Christmas, and it couldn’t come at a better time especially since restaurants and servers continue to struggle during the pandemic.

Johnny Holloway said the surprise happened Saturday in Hendersonville.

He and the customer bonded over both of them being graduates of Morehouse College in Atlanta. The man said he also worked in the restaurant business.

Holloway said what happened next shows there is still a lot of good out there.

“It was truly altruistic because they didn’t wait for me to see it, they just left the tip and left. It was amazing,” Holloway said. “It couldn’t have come at a better time. It’s Christmastime. I can share some of this love with my family now. I’m still in shock. I couldn’t believe it when I saw the $1,000 tip. I’ve never gotten anything like that before.”

Holloway said he’s going to put most of it into savings and maybe use it when he really needs it.
