Street race in excess of 80 mph leads to deadly crash in east Charlotte

CHARLOTTE — A 21-year-old man was killed in a crash Thursday night while racing along an east Charlotte road.

Daniel David Knapp, driving a 1999 Jeep Cherokee, was racing a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta driven by Amy Linares, 20, on Parkton Road near Albemarle Road.

Police said the pair were traveling more than 80 mph in a 25-mph zone when Knapp lost control and hit a tree. He died at the scene.

Linares was charged with involuntary manslaughter, willful speed competition, no operator’s license, no liability insurance and fictitious registration.

Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash, but blood test results are pending as the investigation continues.
