Student teams up with researchers to learn about COVID-19 transmission in schools

CHARLOTTE — A 10th grade student at Providence Day teamed up with researchers to learn how COVID-19 spread in schools.

Pavan Thakkar was curious about the coronavirus’ effects when in-person learning resumed during the pandemic.

“And so in August of 2020 when out school first decided to come back to in-person learning, I reached out to our head of Upper School about whether or not I could conduct a study of COVID-19 transmission at the school,” Thakkar said.

So, the high school sophomore took on a project more common among students in medical school and professional researchers.

“It didn’t really feel like work or anything like that,” Thakkar said. “It’s a lot of weekends and nights that I could work on it but it wasn’t a problem to balance it, because it was something I was so passionate and interested in.”
