Suspect dug holes at historic fort, possibly looking for artifacts, sheriff says

IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — Someone tried to get into a historical fort in Iredell County and dug holes in the ground, possibly looking for artifacts, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies were called to a trespassing complaint Friday at Fort Dobbs, which is north of Statesville.

Investigators said that a man “dug numerous holes around the property, possibly looking for artifacts.”

Attempting to remove artifacts from a historical site is a Class 3 misdemeanor in the state.

According to the N.C. Historic Sites webpage, “Fort Dobbs is situated in the Piedmont region of North Carolina near the Foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Ft. Dobbs State Historic Site provides a window into the tumultuous period of history known as the French and Indian War (1754-1763) or Seven Years War.

“As the only state historic site associated with the period, it represents North Carolina’s link with a global war for empire that crossed five continents, lasted nearly a decade and sowed the seeds for independence.”
