Police: Teen faces murder charge after car chase ends in deadly west Charlotte crash

CHARLOTTE — Two people were rushed to the hospital after a police chase ended in a deadly crash on Jan. 11 in west Charlotte.

One person was killed in the wreck off Tuckaseegee Road and Daleview Drive and a teenager is facing a murder charge, officers said. Police told Channel 9 that the driver was 16-year-old Tayshawn Lowery. Investigators said they can’t release specifics about charges in juvenile cases, but did confirm the driver is facing a murder charge.

“Carlos, my stepfather, he still can’t walk,” Donte Jones told Channel 9. “My mom is still on crutches.”

His parents, Carlos and Trish Gatewood, have a long road to recovery and their friend, Micky Brown, was killed.

Lowery sped away from police while they were conducting a traffic stop earlier that night and later got into the wreck, according to police.

Lowery was known to wear an ankle monitor, but it is unclear if he was wearing one at the time of the collision and chase.

Police confirmed the vehicle Lowery was in was stolen. Officers said they found a handgun in the car, which was illegal for Lowery to have because of his young age.
