Trump's interest in Mooresville golf club has residents on the fence

MOORESVILLE, N.C.,None — Donald Trump wants to buy The Point Lake and Golf Club in Mooresville for several million dollars, and Thursday night members of the club met to learn more about the plans.

The property includes a golf course, pool, tennis courts, and clubhouse. According to club members, who started a website called Say Yes to TrumpTrump, the business mogul wants to buy the property for about $7.1 million.

"There's always pros and cons," Laura Cotter, a golf member, said.

She said she's heard Trump's project includes upgrades to the golf course and common areas.

"There will be improvements to be made with him coming in," she said. "Property values will increase."

But she is also unsure about how much it will cost to join the new club and what will happen to her current membership. She understands why some people are worried about other changes Trump may make.

"People have invested a lot of money here to build here and to move here," she said.

Some residents said they were still on the fence about the decision. Others said they were ready to vote yes. None wanted to appear on camera and many said they had been told by the club or other members to stay quiet, or they personally felt it could be inappropriate.

Trump's representatives never returned calls for comment. The Point's manager, Mark Tingle, also did not return messages.

But local economic development officials say the Trump brand would be a strong addition to the Lake Norman area, and possibly help attract other businesses as well.

"His name carries a lot of weight just as a brand itself," Robert Carney, the Executive Director of the Mooresville South Iredell Economic Development Corporation. "It would probably do some benefit to a community that's already very well thought of."

Members of The Point have until March 29 to vote yes or no on the sale.
