TSA agents at CLT find more than 100 guns on travelers this year

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — TSA agents at Charlotte Douglas International Airport found a record number of guns on travelers this year -- 103 guns.

That’s nearly double what agents found in 2020, when 55 guns were confiscated. In 2019, 74 guns were found and in 2018, 76 guns were found.

The TSA said many times it’s just a matter of travelers making mistakes.

“Ninety-nine percent of the time it’s people saying, ‘Oops I forgot,’ so it’s a matter of taking a couple minutes to get your bearings. Making sure that if you do carry that you don’t have the gun with you when you’re getting ready to travel,” said Mark Howell with TSA.

Normally, if someone is caught with a gun at the airport they are arrested and charged with violating a city ordinance. Right now, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers are not enforcing city ordinances.

Channel 9 asked TSA about it. They directed us to CMPD who directed us to the city, which has not yet responded.
