Public outcry grows as board members face resignation demands over Crystal Hill’s firing

CHARLOTTE — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education is facing continued public criticism following the decision to fire former Superintendent Dr. Crystal Hill, including calls for board members who supported her removal to resign.

Board Chair Dee Rankin said he has no plans to step down.

“At this moment, that’s not a decision that I plan on making, or doing anything like that,” Rankin said.

Several petitions on Change.org call for the resignation of board members who voted to fire Hill. The largest has just over 1,100 signatures.

District 1 representative Dr. Charllitta Hatch said in a statement that her commitment to the district extends beyond any single vote. She said she welcomes engagement from people who agree and disagree with her decisions.

Rankin said he understands the public’s concerns but urged people to allow ongoing investigations to proceed and board leaders to continue their work.

The board is scheduled to meet Tuesday night, with 42 people signed up to speak during public comment. About 10 are expected to address the controversy surrounding Hill’s firing.

Rankin said rules prohibit comments about student matters, vulgar language, and personal attacks during public comment.

He also pointed to the meeting’s full agenda, saying the board will continue working through policies and other business.

Board members who voted to fire Hill are facing calls to resign, but their terms do not expire until 2029.

Former board Chair Stephanie Sneed said last week that she had no plans to resign.

New Vice Chair Liz Monterrey Duval, who also voted to fire Hill, was contacted for comment but had not responded as of Monday evening.
