UNION COUNTY, N.C. — Union County Public Schools says it will reinstate the traffic director position at Waxhaw Elementary and Antioch Elementary Schools.
Earlier this month, UCPS told Channel 9’s Gina Esposito that it cut traffic director positions at 13 schools due to a budget decrease. These are the people who help students cross the street and direct traffic during drop-off and pick-up.
Parents in Waxhaw and town leaders had safety concerns about this decision and planned to meet with district leaders to discuss it.
On Wednesday, Esposito spoke with parents at Antioch Elementary School, which lost its traffic director position.
The school’s principal told parents on Saturday that the school would use available funds to get a traffic director for morning drop-off. Some parents were relieved after hearing that news.
On Thursday, the district sent Esposito an email saying that after further discussion, review, and assessment, UCPS will reinstate morning traffic directors at Antioch and Waxhaw elementary schools. They will be in place on the first day of school on Monday.
There was no mention of the other 11 schools.
