VIDEO: Bear walks up to Gaston Co. hardware store

GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — A black bear cub is causing a stir in Gaston County after surveillance cameras captured it walking up to a local hardware store early Monday morning.

Police said a passing driver called 911 just before 7 a.m. to report the bear sighting.

"I'm across from Ferguson ACE Hardware in Cherryville and there's a black bear that ran just behind there. I kid you not," the caller told dispatchers.

Police officers said when they arrived, the bear had disappeared but there was video footage of the cub on the store's surveillance system.

"This is new for us. We've had deer, dogs and cats -- all that sort of stuff but not a bear," said owner David Ferguson.

Ferguson said the bear disappeared into the woods behind his store and he wondered if a mother bear or other cubs lived in the area as well.

"It's just very rare that you see an actual bear," Ferguson said.
