Investigators add accessory to murder charge in Rowan County teen's slaying

ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. — Deputies have arrested a 25-year-old man they said shot and killed a teenager early Sunday morning in Rowan County.

Hayden Godair and Savanah Dial, 21, were taken into custody around 2 a.m. Monday in Robeson County after deputies responded to a call about a suspicious vehicle being stuck in the mud.

Deputies said when they arrived, Godair initially gave them a fake name. Upon further investigation, officials determined the suspect was driving a stolen truck and a stolen pistol was reportedly found inside.

The couple also had a stolen gun, deputies said.

Godair was arrested and charged with murder in the slaying of 17-year-old Jabari Rogers.

Dial was initially charged with larceny of a motor vehicle and possession of a stolen firearm. Later in the week, Dial was charged with accessory to murder.

Godair is in jail, and the judge did not set a bond for his release. Dial is under a $300,000 bond.

According to deputies, Rogers was found around 1 a.m. Sunday suffering from a gunshot wound in a driveway on Cone Drive in Woodleaf.

Emergency crews said they performed several lifesaving procedures, but all were unsuccessful and Rogers was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies learned Rogers was shot by someone who had fled the scene. An initial investigation identified Godair as the shooter and authorities began searching for him immediately. Dial accompanied Godair in the stolen truck.

Officials said Godair has a lengthy criminal history, including charges for felony breaking and entering, larceny and disorderly conduct.

Godair reportedly has ties to Davie and Rowan counties.

Investigators said a vehicle was taken from Parks Road in Woodleaf and they believed Godair may have stolen it.

The vehicle was described as a white 1998 GMC Sonoma truck with black paint on the doors and hood.

Neighbors told Channel 9 they heard three gunshots then spotted a number of deputies speeding to the area to respond.

They said they were shocked to learn someone had been killed and a suspected gunman was still on the loose.

"When I found out today what it was all about, it would scare anybody, you would think," neighbor Debra Helms said. "Stay inside, I guess. Not open the door to anyone you don't know and if I see somebody suspicious I'm going to call the police."
