Residents have three weeks before the city turns off the water at their Gastonia apartment complex.
City officials said the Beaver Brook Apartment Complex on Sims Circle hasn't paid the bill in weeks.
Part of the problem is residents said the trash hasn't been picked up in months.
So when the management team said they will pay the water bill, tenants just don't believe them.
Many residents at said they didn't know the water bill had not been paid until they found a notice taped to their doors.
"It just shocked me because I think they are paying things, doing what they are supposed to do over there,” said tenant Denise Wilson.
The city of Gastonia said Carolina Properties Portfolio has only paid the water bill once since it brought the property in June.
Tenants said if the water is cut off, they will have to move. But some said they can't afford to go anywhere else.
"We ain't going to have nowhere to stay,” said tenant Raekwon Saunders.
Tenants said they haven't missed their rent payments, which should cover the cost of water.
But now they want to know what's happened to the money they've paid.
"This needs to stop. Somebody needs to do something about this," said tenant Gregory Curry.
The property manager on site told Channel 9 he will fix the problems and the water bill will be paid.
City of Gastonia officials said they called management twice this month about the mounting water bill. They got the same response each time.
"The check's in the mail," said spokeswoman Rachel Bagley.
But the check never came.
The water bill for the complex could end up costing as much as $18,000.
It must be paid by Oct. 20 or else the city will turn off the water three days later.
"We recognize we have got 20 families living there and that would be affected," Bagley said.
Some tenants said they just paid rent last week. They ask will they get their money back if they’re forced to move.
