CHARLOTTE — On Sunday afternoon at Quail Hollow Club, moments after thousands of fans surrounded the 18th green and cheered Wyndham Clark’s victory in the Wells Fargo Championship, tournament director Gary Sobba left no doubt about how the week went for the event’s organizers.
“Charlotte fans, every time a tournament is played here, you set records,” Sobba told the crowd. “And I tell you, we obliterated every revenue record. So, thank you, Charlotte.”
Clark, at age 29, obliterated the Quail Hollow course, finishing at 265 over four rounds, or 19-under par, the lowest 72-hole score in the tournament’s 20-year history.
He notched his first win in 134 starts on the PGA Tour, and quickly demonstrated that he knows how to play to the crowd.
Asked what Charlotte will mean to him with his victory here, Clark answered, “One of my favorite cities. I may have to get a house here.”
The crowd roared its approval.
Club President Johnny Harris was in good spirits, too, proclaiming the week a success, from the quality of the course to the support from fans and sponsors and behind-the-scenes operations to ensure efficient transportation, concessions, and ticketing.
