Winthrop University scholarship honors late professor killed in crash

ROCK HILL, S.C. — The legacy of a Winthrop University professor killed in a crash six years ago lives on as a foundation in her name has given away thousands of dollars to help students learn.

Cynthia Furr, an English professor at Winthrop, and her 2-year-old daughter Mackie, died in a crash on NC-49 in 2009.

After Cynthia's death Sharon Furr along with her mother and father started the Cindy-Mackie Foundation  to give scholarships to aspiring teachers and art and music students who pursue higher education.

The foundation has given out more than $85,000 to students in and around York County.

Hunter Holt, 13, from Clover also died in the crash that killed Furr and her daughter.

Police said that two other cars were racing when one driver lost control going more than 100 miles per hour and hit Furr's car.

Cynthia's husband Steve Price filed a civil suit saying a developer was to blame for their deaths for not paying for a stoplight at the intersection. Price won the suit and the jury awarded him $3 million.
