Man Connected To Woman Missing In Aruba Lived In Cornelius

None — A man at the center of the investigation of a woman who disappeared while snorkeling in Aruba has ties to the Charlotte area.

Gary Giordano, 50, lived in a home on Peninsula Club Drive on Lake Norman in Cornelius for nearly two years in the mid 2000s.

Neighbors said he married a local Realtor, Connie Klein, in the back yard of his home.

The pair eventually divorced and Giordano moved back to Maryland, where he apparently met Robyn Gardner, the woman he traveled to Aruba with last week and who has since vanished.

Residents near Giordano's former home describe the father of three as a "family man" and said they were surprised by the news.

"I saw his picture and didn't recognize him. I just didn't put two and two together," said neighbor Janet Smith.

Other neighbors, who asked not to be identified, described a different side of Gary Giordano, including a domestic violence incident at his home involving Klein.

Eyewitness News obtained a copy of the Cornelius police report detailing the incident in February 2007. It indicates Klein called 911 after Giordano became drunk and disruptive and threw some items inside their home.

Giordano will remain in Aruba while authorities there continue their investigation.

The FBI is now assisting Aruban authorities in the case, officials said Thursday.
